February 2021 – Preemie of the Month

Maximiliano Diaz aka Mighty Max!
“Prematurity has taught me patience and it got me closer to God, my faith is so much stronger now.” – Max’s Mommy

Maximiliano was born at 31 weeks gestation due to preeclampsia. Everything seemed to happen quickly and I was hospitalized on November 20, 2019 due to high blood pressure and by November 22nd, I was flown by helicopter to a hospital in San Diego with a more advanced NICU.

I was there for two days when the medical team decided I wasn’t getting any better and on November 24th, Max was born by emergency C-section.

Max was born at 31 weeks, weighing 2 lbs., 14 oz. and was only 14 inches long. This was the scariest experience of my life. I had never even heard about the NICU before Max’s early arrival. I had zero idea of what I was about to go through.

My baby spent 40 days in the NICU…the hardest and longest 40 days of our lives. Max was discharged on January 3, 2020.

Mighty Max!

Looking back, what I really wish I knew about the NICU is that it’s not always as bad as it feels when you first step in there and for the most part, everything ends up being okay. Max will turn one next month and I can’t believe how much he has grown. He is hitting all his milestones at his actual age and I am so blessed to have him in my life.
