August 2022 – Editor’s Note

Jenny R. McCormick, Senior Editor PreemieWorld

A preemie’s lack of muscle development, difficulty latching on, and trying to master “suck, swallow, and breath” are just a few of the challenges preemie parents face, not to mention trying to maintain calm in a not so calm environment. No wonder why many preemie parents and NICU professionals find feeding in NICU one of the most difficult parts of the journey.

This month is National Breastfeeding Month. Here are resources for breastfeeding preemie moms:

Positive Preemie Breastfeeding Tips – Download this informative PreemieWorld Freebie with tips to breastfeeding in the NICU. https://preemieworld.com/portfolio-item/positive-preemie-breastfeeding-tips/

Helping My Very Tiny Baby Thrive – Tips on helping your preemie thrive with information on a human milk-based fortifier versus bovine-based fortifiers. https://preemieworld.com/portfolio-item/helping-my-very-tiny-baby-thrive/

Remember, breastfeeding means so many different things. Pumping is still breastfeeding and just attempting to breastfeed IS breastfeeding! Hang in there!
